Business Accounting
Learn Business Accounting
No matter what type of business a person runs, they must utilize some type of business accounting. That doesn't mean they necessarily have to hire an accountant, although many businesses do have a staff accountant to handle all of their business accounting needs. Unlike some other fields of accounting, business accounting is rather general in nature, comprising the functions of several different areas compared to financial and managerial accounting that concentrate more on those functions of accounting. This may include cost accounting, depreciation, inventory control, expense and income allocations, pre-paid income and expense items, and much more.
From an educational standpoint, one can perform business accounting with either an Associates or a Bachelor's degree, though a Bachelor's will allow you to land a job that pays a higher salary. In addition, a higher degree means more responsibility and the opportunity to advance within the company. In many companies you will not go beyond a junior accountant without a Bachelor's degree, no matter how much experience you have in business accounting or other accounting areas. That doesn't mean an Associates' degree is any less important from a personal standpoint, but in the field of business accounting, a four-year degree holds more weight when it comes to promotions.
Business accounting is a good field for new graduates to begin an accounting career. You gain insight into many different functions, thus allowing you to learn as much as possible about the accounting functions of the company for which you work. It's important to know the overall functions of a business accounting system before you attempt to specialize in one particular field, which is why many courses overlap each other between cost accounting, financial accounting, and managerial accounting. Knowing the functions of an entire business accounting position will make it easier for you to transition at a later date into a more specialized area of accounting.
